The Ghost of Bessingham Manor: Exteriors

"The haunted house is instantly recognizable - seen from behind trees, from a moving car, from the road that leads to its gate or from its own garden path... There is something unsettling about the house's brooding self-possession, its visual complexity and its anthropomorphic facade. It is identified as a troubled place, marked by neglect, strange habits and failed rituals of order and maintenance." (Barry Curtis, 'Dark Places,' pg. 31)

No ghosts spotted here, other than the house itself. I read the above passage only a few hours after seeing this place, however, and thought it complemented it nicely.

Bessingham Manor, in rural North Norfolk, built in 1870 for the Spurrell family. Probably safe to say it has seen happier times.

Subterranean Butchery pt. 3

Subterranean Butchery pt. 2

Subterranean Butchery pt. 1

Images from the cellars beneath the Waterstone's in Norwich's Royal Arcade. Last used as a butchers, there still remain a few traces of its former existence - a few hooks, the massive block, the sloping floor, a few health and safety signs. One wall - just behind a pair of flaking arches - seems to have been bricked up later than the others, so was once presumably connected to either the rest of the Arcade or, considering where it faces, beneath the buildings on Castle Street.

Apologies for the image quality - the darkness meant I had to rely on my camera's flash in nearly every instance.

Big Sky

A very blustery Southwold coast.
